Overview
Push notifications let Horsify reach you when something happens (a result posted, a payment taken, a care task falling due) without you having to open the app and look.
Turn them on once per device, from Notification settings. Every notification also appears in the in-app notification bell, so nothing is lost if push is off.
Who Uses This
- Riders: Receive notifications about events, registrations, and bookings
- Organisers: Get notified about registrations, payments, and event updates
- Instructors: Receive booking notifications and schedule changes
- Admins: System-wide notifications and alerts
Key Features
- Push to your browser or the Horsify app, on as many devices as you like
- Choose what buzzes your phone: turn each kind of notification's pushes on or off. Everything still lands in your notification list
- A notification centre in the app: the bell's panel and the full list, filtered by kind and by club, with read and unread, dismiss and undo
- Live: a new notification shows on the bell while the page is open, without a refresh
- A test notification button, so you can check it's working before you rely on it

Running a club or school
- Cancellation requests, and riders who withdrew from a postponed event under its withdrawal offer. New entries come to you by email, not as a notification
- Payments received, and a refund that failed, so the payer hasn't been paid back
- Monthly statements of account ready to review, and a statement payment that needs attention (more was paid than the statement owed)
- A lesson client asking to cancel or moving their booking
- Your organisation's SMS allowance running low or used up (admins only), and emails to a client that aren't arriving (in your notification list only)
- Your club's request to manage a venue approved or declined
- An incident report filed (a fall, a kick, a near miss). Every one is in your notification list; it's also pushed when it's serious or worse, a suspected concussion, looks like it may need reporting to the regulator, or came in from your website's form
- Membership applications, and applications that have been paid and are ready to review
- A published staff roster, and tasks handed back, raised by staff or overdue
- A helper declining a job, and members nominating for work-party tasks
- Care falling due for the school's own horses
- Instructor lesson changes, agistment reminders, and an agistment invoice that is overdue
- Your request for admin access to a club approved or declined
- A paid entry whose ticket has no places left, so you can decide who keeps a place and who is refunded
- A shared trail ride that has reached its go-ahead cutoff without enough riders (in your notification list only)
From Horsify
- News about what has changed in Horsify. These wait in your notification list and are never pushed, so there's no push switch for them
How to Use
Turning Push On
- Go to Notification settings (
/notifications/settings): the cog in the bell's panel, or Settings on the notifications page. The same switch is also on Preferences - Under On this device, switch on Enable push notifications
- In a web browser, Horsify needs to be installed as an app first. If it isn't, Horsify offers to install it; accept, or use the install option in your browser's menu or address bar, then try again
- Allow notifications when your browser or phone asks
- In a browser, use Send test notification to confirm it works (the button isn't shown in the Horsify app)
On an iPhone or iPad
Apple only delivers web push to an app that has been added to the home screen. If you're using Horsify in Safari on iOS, the settings panel tells you so and walks you through it: tap the Share button, choose Add to Home Screen, then open Horsify from that icon and turn push on there.
You only need to do this once per device.
Turning It Off
Switch the same toggle off. That unsubscribes the device you're using: each phone, tablet and computer is turned on and off separately from that device.
Choosing What's Pushed
Under What's pushed to your devices on Notification settings, each kind of notification has its own switch: Lessons, Events, Payments, Horses, Jobs and Organisation. They all start on. Turn one off and those notifications stop buzzing your phone and computer, on every device you've set up. They still appear in your notification list.
A reminder is never lost this way. Whatever would have come to the app comes another way instead:
- With Lessons off, a lesson reminder comes by text (if the school sends texts) or by email, and an instructor's morning summary comes by email
- With Events off, an event reminder comes by text or email, and a result is texted if the club texts results
- With Horses off, a Care Assistant reply comes back by text
Notices with no text or email of their own, such as a change to a lesson you teach or a notice from a club you help run, are in your notification list only while their kind is off.
A club's own push messages (sent from its Messages page, or as an app campaign) aren't one of these kinds, so they arrive whatever you choose here.
Looking for control over which events you hear about? That's a different feature. Event Alerts on your Rider Dashboard let you choose location, distance, disciplines and how often. See Event Alerts Near You. Email preferences live in your rider profile under Communication Preferences.
Where Push Works
- Web browsers on computers and Android: once Horsify is installed as an app from the browser (see Turning Push On). A browser that can't install web apps can't turn push on
- Safari on a Mac: supported on current versions, once Horsify is installed as an app
- iPhone and iPad: only once Horsify is added to the home screen (see above)
- The Horsify app: push is delivered through the app itself
If your browser or device can't do push at all, the settings panel says so rather than offering a switch that wouldn't work.
Privacy & Security
- Web push is encrypted end to end between Horsify and your browser's push service, using the keys your browser generates when you subscribe
- You can turn push off from any device at any time, which unsubscribes that device
- Notifications respect your preferences
The notification's title and message travel in the push itself, so they can appear on a lock screen like any other notification. Bear that in mind on a shared or work device. Nothing sensitive is sent, but a result or a booking reminder will be readable without unlocking.
Your Notification List
The bell and the full list at /notifications show everything sent to you, newest first. That includes your own rider notices and the notices from every club you help run. If you're an admin of two clubs, or you ride at one club and coach at another, you don't need to switch clubs to find a notification you were pushed.
The badge on the bell is the number of notifications you haven't read (it shows 99+ past ninety-nine). It updates while the page is open: when a push arrives, when you come back to the tab, and when you read something in another tab.
The bell's panel
On a computer or tablet, the bell opens a panel with your latest notifications under Today, Yesterday, Earlier this week and Older:
- All or Unread at the top
- Mark all as read (the double tick) and Notification settings (the cog)
- See all notifications opens the full list
On a phone, open the menu tab on the right of the screen: the bell beside your name at the top of the menu carries your unread count, and tapping it opens the full list. A red dot on the menu tab means something is unread.
Reading the list
- An unread notification has a dot and a tinted background
- Action needed marks an unread notification that is waiting on you, such as a cancellation request or a refund that failed
- Each notice from a club says which club it came from
- Several of the same thing on the same day are grouped: for example, 3 cancellation requests for one show, or 3 school horses due for shoeing. Show all opens the group
Filtering
On the notifications page you can narrow the list:
- All or Unread
- By kind: Lessons, Events, Payments, Horses, Jobs, Organisation and From Horsify (only the kinds you've been sent appear), each with its unread count
- From: one club, if you hear from more than one
The page remembers the filter in its address, so you can bookmark or share a filtered view of your own list. Mark all as read marks what the filter shows.
Tidying up
- Point at a notification (or tap ⋯ on a phone) to Mark as read, Mark as unread or Dismiss it
- A dismissed notification can be brought back with Undo for a few seconds
- Clear read notifications, at the foot of the page, removes everything you've read (it asks first)
Read notifications are kept for 90 days, and unread ones for a year.
Tapping a notification
A notification about a club opens on that club, not on whichever club you last had selected. For example:
- Payment received opens the payments list for the club that was paid
- A membership application opens that club's applications
- A cancellation request opens that club's pending cancellations
- A helper declining a job opens the helper roster for that event
- A work task, or a published roster, opens your own week or day on My day
- Card payment confirmed (for riders) opens your registration
The link only chooses which of your own clubs to show. It never opens a club you don't already have access to.
Who hears about a club's horses
Maintenance reminders for a riding school's own horses, such as shoeing falling due, go to that club's active admins and staff with School horses access only, not to its riders. Each of them can turn these notices off for themselves under Notices from organisations you help run on Notification settings, unless they're the last person still hearing them.
