Event Map Feature

Overview

The Event Map (/events/map) shows upcoming equestrian events as pins on an interactive Google map. You can browse everything on offer, or narrow it to a date range and a radius around where you are.

Features

Interactive Map Display

  • Google Maps Integration: Events are displayed as markers on an interactive Google Maps interface
  • Event Markers: Each event is shown with a red marker at its venue location
  • Info Windows: Click on any marker to see event details including:
    • Event title and image
    • Venue name and location
    • Event dates
    • Disciplines
    • Description preview
    • Link to full event details

Filtering Options

Date Range Filter

  • Start Date: Filter events starting from a specific date (default: today)
  • End Date: Filter events ending by a specific date (default: 6 months from today)
  • Easily adjust the date range to focus on specific timeframes

Location-based Filter

  • Use my location: your browser asks your permission, then the map centres on where you are
  • Radius (km): how far to search — anything from 1 to 1000 km, and 100 km to start with
  • Visual Radius: when location filtering is active, a circle overlay shows the search radius
  • Your Location Marker: a marker shows your position when filtering by distance

The radius only takes effect once you've shared your location — there's nothing for it to measure from otherwise.

User Interactions

  1. Initial load — the map opens showing upcoming events for the next six months.
  2. Apply filters — change the start date, end date or radius, then click this to reload the map.
  3. Use my location — your browser asks permission, then events are filtered to your radius. If you decline, the map keeps working without distance filtering.
  4. Clear location — appears once a location is set; removes the distance filter and keeps your dates.

Browser Requirements

  • Geolocation: any current browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)
  • JavaScript: must be enabled for the map to work

Privacy Considerations

  • Your location is only requested when you click Use my location. Nothing happens until you allow it in your browser.
  • Your coordinates are sent to Horsify to work out which events fall inside your radius — the filtering is done on the server, not in your browser.
  • They are used for that search only. They are not saved to your profile or kept as a record of where you've been.
  • You can decline location access and still use the map; you'll simply see events for the date range rather than a radius.

Troubleshooting

"Google Maps is not configured" — the map needs a Google Maps key set up by Horsify. If you see this message, contact support.

No events appear — widen the date range, increase the radius, or use Clear location to drop the distance filter. An event can only appear on the map if its venue has a recorded map location.\n\n---\n\nSource: wiki/features/EVENT_MAP_FEATURE.md \nLast synced: 2026-10-06 06:11:38 UTC
