Overview
The Checkbox group field type renders a group of checkboxes, letting participants select multiple options from a list you define. It's ideal for volunteer preferences, dietary requirements, multi-select interests, or anything where more than one answer can apply at once.
It's available anywhere you build a form: the Entry Form Builder for a single event, and the Entry Form Template Builder for reusable templates — including the template that serves your club's public membership application form.
Who Should Use This Feature
Perfect For
- Event organisers collecting volunteer shift preferences ("Morning", "Afternoon", "Evening")
- Riding clubs gathering dietary or accommodation preferences for multi-day events
- Associations allowing members to select multiple interest areas during applications
Prerequisites
- You must be an admin of your organisation
- Access to the Entry Form Builder or the Entry Form Template Builder
Key Features
☑️ Multi-Select Checkboxes
Unlike a radio button or dropdown (single select), a Checkbox Group allows participants to check any combination of options:
- Each option appears as a labelled checkbox
- Zero or more options can be selected
- All selected values are stored together in the participant's form response
⚙️ Configurable Options
Because a checkbox group is meaningless without options, the field editor opens as soon as you add one. In it you set:
- The Label (e.g. "Volunteer Shift Preferences")
- A Description (optional) — instructional text shown above the checkboxes, e.g. "Club events require support from our members. Please advise where you would like to assist:"
- Checkbox Options (required) — type an option and click Add, or press Enter. Add as many as you need; hover an option to remove it.
- Include "Other" option with free-text field — adds an extra "Other" checkbox with a box beside it, so someone can tick it and type their own answer
- Whether the field is required
🔀 Works with Conditional Logic
A checkbox group can drive conditional logic in your form — show or hide other fields depending on which options are ticked. Set that up in the form's logic editor.
Note: a checkbox group's options are always the list you type. Unlike some other field types, it can't be linked to a data source that fills the options for you.
📊 Responses in Entry List & Exports
Checkbox Group responses appear in:
- The Entry List grid as a comma-separated list of selected values
- Excel exports with all selected options in a single cell
- The registration confirmation PDF, listing the selections under ENTRY FORM RESPONSES
How to Use
Adding a Checkbox Group Field
- Open the Entry Form Builder for your event (or the Entry Form Template Builder for a reusable form)
- Add a Checkbox group field — its icon is a ticked list, and the hint reads "Tick any that apply"
- The field editor opens straight away, because the field needs options before it makes sense
- Enter the Label (e.g. "Volunteer Preferences")
- Optionally add a Description to explain what you're asking for
- Type each option and press Enter (or click Add)
- Tick Include "Other" option with free-text field if people should be able to write their own answer
- Mark the field Required if at least one selection is mandatory
- Set the field position in the form, and save
Viewing Responses
- Go to Organiser → Events → [Event Name] → Registrations
- Open a registration or view the entry list
- Checkbox Group responses appear as a list of the selected options
