Overview
Showgrounds are exactly where mobile coverage runs out. Offline judging lets a judge — or an organiser sitting beside one — download a day's dressage score sheets while there is signal, score rider after rider with no connection at all, and send the marks to Horsify once the connection comes back.
Offline judging is in the Horsify app for iPhone, iPad and Android. The Horsify website needs a connection: a score sheet opened in Safari or Chrome stops responding when the signal drops, and reloading it offline shows the "You're offline" page. Download the app before the event.
Who Uses This
- Judges: score their own sheets at the arena without signal
- Pencillers: the judge calls the marks and the penciller enters them on an iPad signed in as an organisation admin, then hands it to the judge to sign
- Organisation admins: download every judge's sheets for their event and step through the rides in running order
- Show secretaries: see which rides have been scored and which marks are still waiting to sync
Before you lose signal
- Open the Horsify app and go to Judging.
- Sign in. Organisation admins are asked for their two-factor code (authenticator app, or Text me a code instead). Tick Remember this device for 28 days and the app only asks for your password on later mornings.
- Under Prepare for offline, press Download … sheets for offline on your event, or Download all … sheets when there is more than one.
- A judge gets the sheets assigned to them.
- An organisation admin gets every sheet of their organisation's events, whoever is judging. These events are marked Organiser · every judge's sheets.
- Check the count at the top of Your score sheets: "N sheets on this device · M still to score". That is what you can score offline.
Events from the last 7 days and the next 60 are offered. Download again in the morning if the draw or the sheets have changed since.
Sign in on the morning of the event. A sign-in lasts 24 hours. You can't sign in without signal, but anything already scored stays on the device and sends once you sign in again.
Scoring offline
- Your score sheets lists each event's rides in running order (draw order, then ride time), with the test, ride time, arena and — for an organiser — the judge. When an event has more than one judge, pick a judge to see only their rides.
- Tap a ride to open its sheet. Next rider › and ‹ Previous move through the same list — only that judge's rides if you picked one — so you can score a whole class without going back to the list.
- Moving to another rider saves the marks you entered on the device first. If a mark isn't valid (marks run from 0 to the movement's maximum in halves), the sheet stays open and tells you what to fix.
- Rides with marks the server doesn't have yet show Not synced. Scratched rides show Scratched and take no marks.
- The running total on each sheet is a guide only. Horsify works out the official score on the server.
What the app can and can't do offline
| Action | In the app, offline |
|---|---|
| Enter movement and collective marks and remarks | ✅ Saved on the device, sent when back online |
| Move between riders and events | ✅ |
| The judge's signature | ✅ Signed on the device, sent when back online |
| Submit a sheet | ✅ Queued; sent when back online |
| Errors of course, other penalties, handwriting | ❌ Add these on the website once connected |
| Scratch a ride | ❌ Needs a connection |
| Sign in | ❌ Needs a connection |
The judge's signature
At the end of the test, hand the device to the judge. Under Judge's signature, press Judge to sign; the judge signs in the box with a finger or stylus, then Save signature. It is kept on the device and sent with the marks when the connection returns. Sign again replaces it while the sheet is still a draft.
Signing is not required to submit. If a sheet is submitted without a signature, the app says so first.
Submitting for a judge
An organisation admin can submit a sheet on the judge's behalf. The app then asks you to confirm you are submitting the marks on behalf of the judge, not that you are the judge. Only the judge's own account can confirm "I am the judge".
When the connection comes back
The app sends queued marks when you open Judging or save a sheet while online, and Sync now sends them straight away.
Duplicates can't happen. Every queued change carries its own identifier, and Horsify remembers the ones it has already applied. If a change is sent twice — a flaky connection, or the same device retrying — the second attempt is recognised and ignored.
Score sheets are checked for conflicts. If a sheet changed on the server while the device was offline (someone else scored it, or it was submitted), your upload is refused with "this score sheet has changed on the server since this device last saw it" rather than overwriting their work. Open the sheet and choose Keep my marks and try again or Discard my unsent marks and load the server copy. Nothing is lost until you choose.
