Overview
The competition class editor shows a filtered dropdown of standard class names based on the currently selected discipline. When an organiser is adding or editing a competition class, the class name picker only shows class name suggestions relevant to the selected discipline (for example, jumping heights for a Show Jumping class, or eventing grades for an Eventing class). An "Other" option is always available for custom or non-standard class names.
This reduces data entry errors, enforces naming consistency across events, and speeds up class setup for common disciplines.
Who Should Use This Feature
Perfect For
- Event organisers setting up competition classes for any standard equestrian discipline
- Club administrators wanting consistent class naming across all events
- Multi-discipline event managers working with multiple discipline types in one event
Prerequisites
- You must be an admin of your organisation
- The event itself must have disciplines set. The suggestions offered on a class are the ones belonging to the event's disciplines — set them on the event first, or the picker has nothing to offer.
How It Works
Two things decide what the Class Name dropdown offers:
- The disciplines set on the event. Horsify loads the standard class names for those disciplines when you open the class list.
- The Discipline you choose on the class itself. The dropdown then narrows to that one discipline's names.
So the names you see are the intersection of the two. If a class's discipline isn't one of the event's disciplines, you'll see no suggestions at all — just "Other". That is the usual reason the list looks empty, and the fix is to add the discipline to the event.
The Class Name field sits above the Discipline field on the form, so if you fill it in top to bottom the list will look empty at first. Set the Discipline, then come back to the name.
You can always choose "Other (enter custom class name)" and type whatever you like.
Which Disciplines Have Standard Names
Most disciplines ship with a list. Horsify seeds standard class names for 33 of them, including:
| Discipline | Roughly what you get |
|---|---|
| Western Dressage | The WDAA test titles, which also lets Horsify match each class to its test sheet |
| Working Equitation | The dressage and ease-of-handling trials by level |
| Show Jumping | The standard heights, 60cm through to 1.50m |
| Breed Shows, Showing, Pony Club, Show Horse, Hacking, Showmanship | Age, height and rider-class breakdowns |
| Reining, Cutting, Campdraft, Western, Stockhorse, Rodeo, Roping Events, Arena Sort, Trail, Versatility, Pleasure | The usual Western class progressions |
| Eventing, Endurance, Tetrathlon, Vaulting, Driving, Polo, Polocrosse, Mounted Games, Barrel Racing, Hunter, Lead Rein, Ag Shows, Para Dressage | Each discipline's standard grades or divisions |
Two common disciplines have no seeded list: plain Dressage and Extreme Cowboy Racing. For those — and any discipline not above — the dropdown offers only Other, and you type your own class name. That's expected, not a fault.
Horsify does hold a published catalogue of standard names for Extreme Cowboy Racing, Western Dressage, Working Equitation and Show Jumping that a Horsify admin can load onto the platform on request. If your discipline is one of those and the picker is still empty, ask support to load it.
Custom disciplines your club created can be used to tag an event, but they can't be selected as a competition class's discipline. Competition classes use Horsify's built-in discipline list. If you need a discipline added to that list, contact support.
Key Features
🔍 Filtered Class Name Suggestions
- Class names are scoped to the class's discipline, within the event's disciplines — no irrelevant suggestions
- Suggestions are shown in a standardised progression rather than alphabetically
- Where a class belongs to a level, the level is shown alongside the name
✏️ "Other" Option for Custom Names
- Organisers can always select "Other" to enter a fully custom class name
- Custom names are validated for length but not restricted to the template list
📐 Consistent Naming Across Events
- Using template names means the same class appears with the same name across all events in the organisation
- Enables consistent reporting and comparison across event series
How to Use
- Make sure your event has its disciplines set
- Open the event's Competition Classes
- Click Add Class, or open an existing class
- Set the Discipline for the class (e.g. Show Jumping) — this is further down the form than the name
- Go back to Class Name and open the dropdown — the standard names for that discipline appear
- Pick a standard name, or choose "Other (enter custom class name)" and type your own
- Complete the remaining class details and save
If Horsify can't load the suggestions, it tells you so and you can still use Other.
