Sell one product in several options — for example a club polo in different sizes and colours — using variants. Each variant has its own stock level, and can have its own price and SKU. Shoppers pick their options on the product page before adding to the cart.
Overview
A variant is a specific combination of options for a product. If you sell a shirt in sizes S, M and L and in Red and Blue, that's six variants (3 sizes × 2 colours). You give the option groups clear names (Size, Colour), and Horsify can generate every combination for you in one step.
You manage variants on the product edit screen, in the Variants tab. Variants are only available once a product has been saved, so create the product first, then reopen it to add variants.
Set your option labels
- Open your store, choose a product and click Edit.
- Open the Variants tab.
- Under Variant Options, fill in the labels for the attributes your product varies by:
-
Option 1 Label — e.g.
Size -
Option 2 Label — e.g.
Colour -
Option 3 Label — e.g.
Material
-
Option 1 Label — e.g.
- You only need to fill the labels you use. A product can have one, two or three option groups.
These labels are what shoppers see on the product page (for example "Size" and "Colour" headings), so name them clearly.
Generate variants automatically
Once you've saved the product and set at least the Option 1 label, a Generate Variants section appears.
- Click Generate Variants.
- In the dialog, enter the possible values for each option as a comma-separated list:
- Size:
S, M, L - Colour:
Red, Blue, Green
- Size:
- A preview shows how many variants will be created and lists a few examples.
- Set the Initial Stock per Variant to give every new variant a starting stock level.
- Click Generate. The button shows the total, for example Generate 9 Variants.
Horsify creates every combination (3 sizes × 3 colours = 9 variants). If some of those combinations already exist, they're kept as-is and the confirmation tells you how many new variants were added and how many existing ones were skipped.
Add or edit a single variant
You don't have to generate in bulk. Use Add Variant to create one variant at a time, or the edit icon on any row to change one. For each variant you can set:
- Variant name and the individual option values (Size, Colour, Material)
- SKU (optional)
- Price override — leave blank to use the product's base price
- Stock on hand and whether to track inventory for that variant
The variant list shows each combination as coloured badges (for example a Size badge and a Colour badge) alongside its stock and status. You can't delete the last remaining variant.
Manage stock per variant
Below the variant list, the Variant Stock Management section lets you adjust stock for each variant individually — set a new stock figure, add stock, or turn inventory tracking, backorders and a low-stock threshold on or off. Variants show a clear Low stock or Out of stock indicator so you can see what needs restocking at a glance.
What shoppers see
On the storefront product page, variants appear as selectable option buttons grouped under your labels:
- Each option group (Size, Colour, …) shows its values as buttons.
- The shopper's current selection is highlighted.
- Combinations that aren't available are greyed out, so shoppers can only pick valid options.
- Once a valid combination is selected, the matching variant's price and stock availability are shown before they add it to the cart.
Tips
- Name your options the way customers think about them ("Colour", not "Option 2").
- Use Generate Variants for the full grid, then adjust individual stock or prices where they differ.
- Set a sensible Initial Stock when generating so nothing shows as out of stock by mistake.\n\n---\n\nSource:
