Event Map Feature

Overview

The Event Map feature provides an interactive Google Maps-based visualisation of upcoming equestrian events. Users can discover events near their location and filter by date range and distance.

Features

Interactive Map Display

  • Google Maps Integration: Events are displayed as markers on an interactive Google Maps interface
  • Event Markers: Each event is shown with a red marker at its venue location
  • Info Windows: Click on any marker to see event details including:
    • Event title and image
    • Venue name and location
    • Event dates
    • Disciplines
    • Description preview
    • Link to full event details

Filtering Options

Date Range Filter

  • Start Date: Filter events starting from a specific date (default: today)
  • End Date: Filter events ending by a specific date (default: 6 months from today)
  • Easily adjust the date range to focus on specific timeframes

Location-based Filter

  • Use My Location: Request browser geolocation to centre the map on the user's current position
  • Radius: Set a distance radius (in kilometres) to show only events within that range
  • Visual Radius: When location filtering is active, a circle overlay shows the search radius
  • Your Location Marker: A blue marker shows your current location when filtering by distance

User Interactions

  1. Initial Load: Map centres on Australia showing all upcoming events (next 6 months)
  2. Use My Location: Click to request location access and filter events near you
  3. Show All Events: Click to remove location filters and see all events
  4. Clear Location Filter: Remove the location-based filtering while keeping date filters
  5. Adjust Filters: Modify date range or radius and click to reload events

Browser Requirements

  • Geolocation API: Modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)
  • HTTPS: Location services require HTTPS in production
  • JavaScript: Must be enabled for map functionality

Privacy Considerations

  • Location data is only requested when the user clicks "Use My Location"
  • Location information is not stored on the server
  • Location data is only used for client-side distance filtering
  • Users can decline location access and still use the map without location-based filtering\n\n---\n\nSource: wiki/features/EVENT_MAP_FEATURE.md \nLast synced: 2026-09-07 11:49:06 UTC
