Sharing a Horse with Other Riders
Category: Rider Features
Overview
If more than one person competes on the same horse, horse sharing lets you — the horse's owner in Horsify — give other riders permission to select that horse when they enter events, without handing over the ability to change its details.
It's built for everyday situations like:
- A family pony shared between siblings, so each can enter their own classes.
- A coach's or instructor's horse used by several students.
- A syndicate or part‑loan horse that a few riders campaign, while one person keeps the record up to date.
You stay in full control: only you can edit the horse, upload its photo, manage its health records, or delete it. Riders you share with can view the horse and nominate it for events — nothing more.
Good to know: sharing is instant — there's no invitation to accept. And Horsify does not message the other rider when you share, so let them know yourself that the horse is now available in their account.
Who You Can Share With
You can share with any existing Horsify rider who has a verified email address or mobile number on their account. The other person needs to have signed up and confirmed their email or phone first — you can't share with someone who isn't on Horsify yet.
Everyone keeps a clear role:
- You (the owner) — full control: view, edit, photo, health records, delete, and manage who it's shared with.
- Riders you share with — can nominate the horse for events and view its basic details. They can't edit it, re‑share it, or delete it. In their account the horse is clearly marked read‑only, with a note to "contact the owner to make changes."
Finding "My Horses"
Everything to do with your horses lives on the My Horses page (/rider/horses), which you can reach from the My Horses item in your account menu.
Each horse you own has a three‑dots menu (⋮, "More horse actions") in the top corner of its card. Open it to find Share horse.
Sharing a Horse
- On My Horses, open a horse's ⋮ menu and choose Share horse. The Share dialog opens.
- Type the other rider's verified email address or mobile number and click Search.
- When a match is found, you'll see their name and a reminder of what they'll be able to do — "They will be able to nominate this horse for events, but only you can edit the horse details."
- Click Share horse. It's shared straight away, and the rider now appears under Currently shared with, along with the date you shared and a Remove button.
Back on My Horses, the horse's card now shows a Shared · N rider(s) badge so you can see at a glance that it's shared.
Remember to tell them. Because Horsify doesn't notify the other rider, send them a quick message so they know the horse is now in their My Horses list, ready to enter events with.
If the search finds no one
If you see "No rider with a verified email or phone number was found", it usually means the other rider hasn't verified their email or mobile in Horsify yet (or hasn't signed up). Ask them to confirm their email or phone in their account, then search again.
Using a Horse Someone Shared with You
When a horse is shared with you, it appears in your own My Horses list, badged Shared with you and marked Owned by its owner. It's read‑only — to enter it in an event:
- Start entering the event as normal (Register on the event page).
- On a class that needs a horse, open the Select Horse list.
- Shared horses appear alongside your own, labelled "{horse name} — shared by {owner}". Pick it and complete your entry as usual.
One horse, one daily limit. Governing‑body rules cap how many times a horse can run per day (for example, a maximum number of dressage tests). That limit is counted across everyone who shares the horse, so co‑riders are drawing from the same daily allowance — worth coordinating for a busy day.
Stopping Sharing
To stop sharing, open the horse's Share dialog again, find the rider under Currently shared with, and click Remove. Access ends immediately. If that rider had the horse selected in an event they hadn't finished entering, the entry will no longer go through with that horse. You can re‑share at any time.
Good to Know
- Sharing and un‑sharing are instant and entirely yours to control — there's no request or approval step for the other rider.
- The other rider is not notified by Horsify when you share or unshare — tell them yourself.
- Sharing grants event nomination and viewing only — never editing, re‑sharing, or deleting.
- You can't share a horse with yourself, and you can't share the same horse with the same rider twice.
- The other person must already have a Horsify account with a verified email or mobile before you can find them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the other rider get an email or notification when I share? No. Sharing is silent — please let them know directly so they look for the horse in their My Horses.
Can the rider I shared with change my horse's details? No. They can only nominate it for events and view its basic details. Editing, health records, photos, deleting and re‑sharing stay with you.
Can they share my horse on to someone else? No — only the owner can manage sharing.
How many riders can I share one horse with? As many as you like. Each appears under Currently shared with, and your card shows the total as Shared · N riders.
What happens if I remove access while they're mid‑entry? Access ends immediately, and Horsify won't let that horse be used for the entry — the rider will be told the horse is no longer available.
Why can't I find the person I want to share with? They either aren't on Horsify yet, or haven't verified their email address or mobile number. Once they have, search again.
